Remuera-based Hearing Auckland provides safe and gentle ear wax removal and cleaning with microscope-assisted microsuction

Earwax plays a crucial role in protecting your ear canal from dust, debris and bacteria. But too much wax can cause its own problems leading to blocked ears and reduced hearing or uncomfortable feelings.

Removing earwax is a relatively straightforward process, but many people are worried about the procedure, especially if it involves ear syringing.

At Hearing Auckland, we use microsuction for ear cleaning - a safer and more comfortable procedure.

Hearing Auckland offers expert earwax removal for those aged 16 and over at our hearing clinic, conveniently located in Remuera. No referral is needed so, get in touch to book your appointment today.

Microsuction is a safe and effective way to remove wax

Microsuction is a safe, effective and more comfortable method for removing earwax and ear cleaning.

Unlike ear syringing which uses water, microsuction is a dry procedure which reduces the risk of damage or infection.

The procedure is carried out by one of our registered nurse ear hygienists who uses a microscope to get a clear, magnified view of the ear canal. Then they use a gentle suction device to remove the wax efficiently and painlessly.

The procedure takes 15-30 minutes.

Signs you might benefit from earwax removal

If you notice any of the following then you might want to book an appointment for earwax removal.

  • persistent blocked ears or muffled hearing
  • itching, discomfort, or a full feeling in your ears
  • tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • a history of frequent earwax buildup

Earwax removal is particularly recommended for people who:

  • wear hearing aids as wax can impair their performance
  • use cotton buds, earbuds, or earplugs, which can push wax deeper into the ear canal
  • swim or dive regularly, as wax buildup can trap water and increase infection risk

What to expect at your appointment

Our team ensures your experience is professional, comfortable, and stress-free. Here’s what happens during your visit:

Examination
You'll sit in a chair similar to a dentist's chair and we'll use a microscope to assess your ear canal and the extent of the problem.

Explanation
Your clinician will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have.

Microsuction process
Once you are comfortable the microsuction will be carried out. A small probe attached to a suction tube will be carefully placed in your ear canal and used to remove wax and debris. You’ll hear the suction making a windy sound. Sometimes small forceps may be used to remove hard plugs of wax, skin and foreign objects.
If your ears were blocked, you should notice an immediate result. If you have other concerns about your hearing, we can book you in for a hearing test to check for any hearing loss due to other reasons.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If your ear canal is sensitive or inflamed you may be a little uncomfortable but the procedure should not be painful. The movement of cold air in their ear canal can make some people feel a little dizzy. If it occurs, it is temporary and usually doesn't last very long. Another reaction to having something touch the inside of your ear canal is to cough. This is a normal reflex and nothing to worry about.

Each person produces varying amounts and types of wax. The ear nurse will advise you how often you should have your ears suctioned. This will be more frequent if you wear hearing aids to avoid wax buildup that may damage your hearing aids.
