Donating Hearing Aids

Donating Hearing Aids

We often get asked about donating hearing aids. Sometimes hearing devices that still work are no longer needed by their original owner. At Hearing Auckland, we welcome donations of such devices. We are able to use donations to benefit the community around us. Read on to find out how you can help and the impact that donating hearing aids has.

What happens with your hearing aid donation?

We are a charity and our mission is to help all kiwis to access good hearing. We’ve been working on this mission since 1932. You can donate hearing aids, related consumables, and any other hearing devices to our clinic. When we receive hearing aid donations we are always so grateful, and we assess each donation to determine a suitable second life for the goods. We use some donations in our own clinic, and also distribute them within the community so that they find the best home:
  • Hearing aids may be able to be fitted to individuals who otherwise would be unable to access hearing devices
  • Hearing aid consumables and accessories are shared with clients in our charity programs
  • Older hearing accessories which are no longer being made by the manufacturers can be given to community members who rely on that technology and can no longer purchase it new if theirs breaks
  • Devices which are useable but haven’t found a new home in Auckland are taken to different Pacific Islands when our audiology colleagues make their annual trip to provide hearing services in the Pacific
  • Devices which won’t be beneficial for personal use are donated to University students studying audiology for training
  • Hearing aids which aren’t able to be used for any of these purposes are upcycled into jewellery

What can be donated:

  • Hearing aids
  • Un-used hearing aid consumables such as batteries, domes, drying caps etc.
  • Hearing aid accessories such as chargers, cases, or additional external microphones
  • Other hearing devices such as amplified telephones, TV Bluetooth connectors, or personal amplification systems

Sharing second-hand hearing aids with a friend/relative

If you have recently upgraded your hearing aids, or a loved one has passed away; you may find yourself with hearing aids that are functioning well but are superfluous to your needs. At Hearing Auckland, we may be able to fit these hearing aids to a friend/relative of yours whom you wish to donate the hearing aids to directly. We will need to see the potential recipient for a hearing test and discussion, to see whether the hearing aids will work for their hearing loss and lifestyle . If it’s a good match, we can fit the hearing aids to your friend/relative. This will save them the cost of purchasing new hearing devices for themselves as only fitting/appointment fees and any additional parts will need to be charged for.

Why donate hearing aids?

We think there are two main benefits of donating hearing aids: the social and the environmental. Hearing aids are advanced pieces of technology that can massively improve users’ quality of life, but they aren’t always financially accessible for everybody. Donating hearing aids can share the gift of hearing with someone who otherwise wouldn’t be able to access improved hearing. The additional environmental benefit is that you can keep hearing aids and associated consumables out of landfill. Like most personal electronic devices, hearing aids are built using materials that are difficult to recycle and will take many 1000’s of years to break down. Donating hearing aids benefits other people and also the planet!
